General Safety Tips for

All Watercraft

  • Wear a Life Jacket: Always wear a properly fitted, Coast Guard-approved life jacket — no exceptions. It’s your best protection in the water.

  • Know Your Limits: Don’t push beyond your experience or comfort level. If you’re new to kayaking, paddleboarding, or jet skiing, start slow and ask for guidance.

  • Check the Weather: Water conditions can change quickly. Avoid going out if weather is poor or if strong winds or storms are forecasted.

  • Stay Hydrated & Protected: Bring water and sunscreen. Wear sunglasses and a hat to protect yourself from the sun’s glare.

  • No Alcohol or Drugs: Operating any watercraft under the influence is dangerous and strictly prohibited.

  • Buddy Up: Whenever possible, go out with a friend or in a group for added safety.

JETSKI

SAFETY GUIDELINES

Personal watercrafts (PWCs)—often recognized by popular brand names such as Jet Ski, WaveRunner, and Sea-Doo—offer a thrilling ride but they should never be treated merely as playthings. Due to their distinct structure, jet propulsion system, and agility, it’s essential for riders to both understand how they work and handle them responsibly.

  • Age Requirement: Riders must be at least 16 years old while driver 21 years old.
  • Safety Briefing: All jet ski renters receive a mandatory safety briefing before heading out.
  • Speed Control: Keep speed appropriate for the area and conditions. Follow local laws and posted speed limits.
  • Keep a Safe Distance: Maintain safe distances from swimmers, other boats, and shorelines.
  • Emergency Stop: Learn how to quickly stop and restart your jet ski in case of emergency.

RIDING GUIDELINES

  1. Watch for Traffic: Other boaters may not expect the quick maneuvers of a PWC. Stay alert and predictable.

  2. Check Before Turning: Look both sides and behind before any turn to avoid collisions.

  3. Keep Distance: Stay well clear of other boats, shorelines, swimmers, and beach areas.

  4. Avoid Reckless Moves: Don’t follow too closely, jump wakes, or spray others.

  5. Expect Falls: Falls are part of learning. Let go during a fall to avoid injury. Reboard only with the engine off—driver first, then passengers.

  6. Capsize Recovery: If flipped, follow the instructions on the rear label to right the craft safely.

  7. Protect the Environment: Avoid shallow or sensitive areas. Jet pumps can stir up debris or damage ecosystems, especially in water less than 3 feet deep.

Before

You Ride

  1. Familiarizing Yourself with Your Personal Watercraft: Understand the owner’s manual and all safety warnings, especially jet propulsion operation.
  2. Wear Proper Gear: Use neoprene shorts or a wetsuit to protect against water impact during falls.
  3. Board Safely: Never board with the engine running. Keep hair and loose clothing away from the pump intake.
  4. Balance & Control: Paddle boards require good balance; beginners should stay close to shore.
  5. Know the Laws: Review local boating regulations, including age and operation restrictions for Personal Watercrafts (PWC).
  6. Respect Capacity Limits: Never exceed the recommended weight or passenger limits; it can affect performance and safety.
  7. Understand Controls: Learn how the steering, throttle, and safety lanyard work. Always attach the lanyard to your wrist or life jacket and remove it when not in use.
  8. Wear a Life Jacket: All riders must wear a U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jacket.
  9. Protect Yourself: Use eyewear for visibility, and gloves or footwear for better grip and comfort.
  10. Dress for Weather: In cooler conditions, wear a wetsuit or windproof jacket and pants to stay protected from the elements.

What to Do in an

Emergency

  1. Stay Calm: Try to remain calm and keep your life jacket on.

  2. Signal for Help: Use hand signals or a whistle to attract attention.

  3. Stay With Your Watercraft: Unless unsafe, stay near your kayak, paddleboard, or jet ski.

  4. Call 911: If possible, call emergency services or alert a nearby boat or patrol.
